Telemedicine

The division operates a telemedicine program that extends our services for both clinical genetics and metabolism issues. The program uses web-based, proprietary software that is secure and HIPAA compliant, and enables point-to-point conferencing through the use of desktop machines, tablets, and smartphones. The program provides services to underserved areas, in selected hospitals, and in patient’s homes, with emphasis on the Florida Panhandle region.

Our main areas of telemedicine activity involve providing genetic counseling to families with certain disorders identified by newborn screeningmonitoring dietary management for those with certain inborn errors of metabolism (such as PKU), and extending physician consultations. In extending physician consultations, a genetic counselor might attend an outreach clinic but coordinate the consultation with a Gainesville-based clinical geneticist.
